It’s been 50 years since It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World was released. And what a cast! Not only was the ensemble cast stellar, but the cameos included a bevy of classic comic actors like Jack Benny, Edward Everett Horton, Carl Reiner, and two of the Bowery Boys. I love that madcap romp and IMNSHO the story stands the test of time.
What if the movie was remade with today’s best known comics? Who could play the roles?
Here are my nominations…Ricky Gervais in Terry Thomas’ role of Algernon; James Franco as Dick Shawn’s lifeguard, Sylvester; David Spade as Mickey Rooney’s Ding Bell; Steve Martin in Spencer Tracy’s police captain role; and the Mehlville and Monica characters originally played by Sid Caesar and Edie Adams, with Johnny Galecki and Kaley Cuoco. Still pondering a few of the others. Who has the edginess to play Phil Silver’s character, Otto? And what of Jonathan Winters’ uncontrollable Mr. Pike? Robin Williams seems like a natural, but he’s a bit too old for the role.
It’s fun to imagine how the story line might be updated, too. GPS would definitely play a role in the the race to the park. And smart phones. But the scenes I couldn’t bear to see left out include the Crump’s Hardware store escapade and the airplane scenes with Buddy Hackett, Mickey Rooney and Jim Backus. Because, after all, what could go wrong with an Old Fashioned?
